Abstract

A drive shaft (12) and a first impeller (22) have face-to-face mounting surfaces (28, 18) spaced by shims (38). A second impeller (30) has a hub (34) with a bore (36) the internal profile of which is substantially the same as that defined by the total cross-section of the shaft (12) and the mounting member (24) bearing the mounting surface (28), with a transverse dimension of the bore (36) being less than that of the shaft end (14) and the mounting member (24) together. At least one of the impellers (22, 30) has a radial agitator blade (26, 32). Preferably, the shaft (12) and impellers (22, 30) are coated with a corrosion-resistant material, such as glass. To assemble the agitator, a U-shaped tool is used to bow the mounting part (24) into the dotted line configuration, Fig. 3, whence the hub (34) is slid over the shaft end and mounting portions (14, 24); after the tool is released the parts remain clamped together. <IMAGE>
