Abstract
A vehicle window comprises a pane (22) bonded to the peripheral region (12) of a window opening by adhesive (16). The exterior of the peripheral region is covered by an elongate member of L-shaped cross- section (14) of rubber or plastics which covers the edge (12a) of the peripheral region (12) and adhesive (16). The member (14) is bonded to the peripheral region by, for example, adhesive tape (18). A glossy film (20) may be applied to the exterior surface of the member, or the surface may be grained or embossed. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Window for a vehicle
The invention relates to a window for a vehicle comprising a pane bonded to the peripheral region of the window opening.
To some extent today, the panes of vehicle windows are no longer supported in rubber profiles, but are bonded directly onto the metal of the window opening by using adhesive substances, for example PU adhesives.
The metal edge is this exposed on the inside.
This edge is generally formed by two sheet metal parts which lie flat and adjacent to each other and are spot welded together. The spot welded points are exposed and can be seen from outside. From the visual point of view, this is unaesthetic. Moreover, the asembly of this vehicle window is complicated because when pressing the pane outwards, the adhesive is pressed out so that in most cases the adhesive edge does not close up the edge of the window opening, but swells out over the peripheral region of the window opening and thus can still be seen after the assembly process has been completed. The excess adhesive must be removed at a later stage, generally by hand.
The object of the invention is to provide a window for a vehicle, which avoids the disadvantages described above, and does not require any further complicated working steps after the assembly step.
According to the invention there is provided a window for a vehicle, comprising a pane bonded by an adhesive layer to the peripheral region of a window opening, and an angular profile positioned on the open side of the peripheral region of the window opening, a cross-piece of the angular profile fitting onto the pane and covering the edge of the peripheral region and the adhesive layer.
The advantages achieved by the invention are derived particularly from the fact that the
metal region containing the spot welded
points is covered over by this angular profile, and thus can no longer be seen from the outside. The upper, squared-off side of the angular profile extends to the pane which is to
be inserted and covers the upper edge of the
adhesive layer, so that when the pane is subsequently pressed in the adhesive can no
longer issue at the top but is enclosed in the space between the peripheral region, the pane
and the angular profile. Therefore, no subsequent working steps are necessary e.g. to
remove the pressed out adhesive from the
pane.
In a preferred embodiment, the angular
profile is secured to the peripheral region by
means of an adhesive tape, since this provides for a particularly simple assembly.
In order to improve the appearance of this fitting arrangement, a glossy film can be applied onto the open surface of the angular profile or the surface can be embossed or grained.
The invention is further described below with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a cross section through a vechicle window of the invention.
This window comprises a conventional window opening 10 which is formed by two sheet metal parts 1 0a and 1 Ob which are bonded together flat by spot welding and form a peripheral region 1 2.
An adhesive tape 1 8 is applied to the open interior of the peripheral region 1 2. The inside of an L-shaped angular profile 14 is fitted and pressed onto the adhesive tape. The angular profile 14 is thus tightly bonded to the peripheral region 12.
The L-shaped angular profile 14 has an extended region 1 4b lying adjacent to the peripheral region 12, and also a squared-off cross-piece 1 4a which projects over the edge 1 2a of the peripheral region 1 2. As shown in the drawing, the lower side of the cross-piece 1 4a rests on the edge 12a. The angular profile 1 4 is made of rubber or a plastics material, preferably a thermoplastic material, and more preferably polyvinyl chloride.
In assembling this vehicle window, the angular profile 1 4 is first of all fitted onto the peripheral region 1 2 of the window opening 10 in the manner described above. An adhesive layer 1 6 is then sprayed; e.g. in caterpillar shape, onto the surface of the peripheral region 12, opposite the angular profile 14.
For this purpose, an adhesive based on PU is appropriately used.
When this arrangement is now pressed against a pane 22, the cross-piece 1 4a of the angular profile 1 4 moves into a position against the pane 22, so that the adhesive 1 6 which is also compressed, cannot issue at the top from the space between the pane 22, the cross-piece 1 4a and the peripheral region 12, as shown in the drawing. There is no problem if the adhesive issues at the bottom because this region of the vehicle window cannot be seen from outside.
Since the above mentioned spot welded points are covered by the angular profile, they cannot be seen from outside so that the peripheral region of this window is visually unobjectionable. In order to improve the appearance, a glossy film 20 can be applied onto the free surface of the angular profile 14 or the profile can be embossed or grained.
1. A window for a vehicle, comprising a pane bonded by an adhesive layer to the peripheral region of a window opening, and an angular profile positioned on the open side of the peripheral region of the window opening, a cross-piece of the angular profile fitting onto the pane and covering the edge of the
