Abstract

A board or panel, especially for use on the exterior of buildings, comprises a wood or asbestos based substrate having adhered thereto a coating of particles or granules.

Description

SP ECIFICATION Particle coated boards This invention relates to boards or panels, especially wood or asbestos based, which are coated with particles, especially stone or pebble like particles, to give a pebble-dashed effect.
According to the present invention there is provided a wood or asbestos based substrate having adhered thereto a coating of particles or granules.
The particles or granules are adhered to the substrate by means of a suitable glue. Preferably the glue is a polyvinyi acetate glue and more preferably the glue includes a filler or extender. A preferred filler or extender is silver sand, preferably silver sand containing not more than 5% moisture.
Examples of the substrate are plywood, blockboard, particle board, hardboard, asbestos cement board, and plain timber.
The coated boards can be used for many applications, for instance as the walls for huts and garages and the outer walls of domestic dwellings, factories and agricultural buildings, as well as for decorative panels for buildings.
The particles or granules may be made of any suitable material. For instance, they may be any kind of pebbles which are preferably graded for approximate uniformity of size and they may, for instance, be the sort of pebbles normally used for conventional pebble-dashing.
An example of the present invention will now be given.
Polyvinyl acetate is mixed with 10% by weight water to form an emulsion. Two parts by weight of this emulsion is then added to 8 parts by weight of silver sand (having not more than 5% moisture).
The resultant mixture is thoroughly agitated until the sand is dispersed evenly in the emulsion.
More water may be added at this stage to achieve the desired emulsion. The resultant glue is then applied to a substrate board, for instance plywood, to form a coating of uniform thickness of, for instance, between 1.5 and 2.5 mm. Pebbles are then applied to the glue and pressed into it to form an even layer. The glue is then left to dry and set, after which any loose pebbles are brushed off.
The resultant pebbie-dash board has the same appearance as a conventional pebble-dashed wall.
Thus the glue when dried has the same colour as conventional sand and cement mixes when they are used for pebble-dashing applications.
1. A board or panel comprising a wood or asbestos based substrate having adhered thereto a coating of particles or granules.
2. A board or panel according to claim 1 wherein the particles or granules are adhered to the substrate by a polyvinyl acetate glue.
3. A board or panel according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the particles or granules are adhered to the substrate by a glue which includes a filler or extender.
4. A board or panel according to claim 1 wherein the filler or extender is silver sand.
5. A board or panel substantially as described herein.
6. A board or panel substantially as described in the specific example.
7. A building which includes a board or panel as claimed in any of the preceding claims.
