Abstract

A frame for a kart, which by definition does not have an elastic or hinged suspension device, is provided with a configuration which supports the rear wheels (2) in bending and torsional modes. This is achieved by providing frame members (14) extending between transverse frame members (13) and (6) and bending outwardly at (16) to carry bearing supports (18) for the rear axles. Flexing of these frame members is accommodated by universal joints (28). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFiCATION Improved vehicle frame This invention relates to frames for vehicles, and especially for the simple type of motor vehicle known as a kart.
A kart is defined by limitations in an equipment specification published by the International Karting Commission which controls the sport of karting. The definition is mainly by dimension of the vehicle itself and its wheels. One other restriction placed is that any suspension device, either elastic or hinged, is prohibited.
According to the present invention, there is provided a frame for a vehicle having front and rear wheels, and an engine driving the rear wheels, the frame comprising a forward transverse frame member, generally longitudinal frame members extending rearwardly from the forward transverse frame member to an intermediate transverse frame'member, a subsidiary transverse frame member extending between the longitudinal frame members at a location between the forward and intermediate transverse frame member, and a longitudinal connection between the intermediate transverse frame member and a rear transverse f.rame member, the frame also including a pair of generally longitudinally extending rear wheel supporting members extending rearwardly from the subsidiary transverse frame member below the intermediate transverse frame member and terminating at the rear transverse frame member, 'and laterally outwardly between the intermediate and rear transverse frame members to bearing supports for the rear wheels.
In order to accommodate movement of the wheels relative to the frame consequent upon flexing of the wheel supporting members, the rear axles may include universal joints between a central drive member mounted on the longitudinal connection and the bearing supports.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawing, of which the single figure is a plan view of a preferred form of frame for a kart, with wheels and some other components also shown.
The drawing shows the frame of a kart supported on steerable front wheels 1 and driven rear wheels 2. The frame consists of a forward transverse frame element 3, a pair of generally longitudinal frame members 4 extending rearwardly from the frame element 3 as far-as an intermediate transverse frame member 5. Near the forward end, the longitudinal frame members are supported by the front wheels 1. The intermediate transverse frame member 5 is somewhat forward of the rear wheels 2, and between this frame member 5 and the front wheels 1, there is also provided a subsidiary transverse frame member 6. Between the transverse frame members 5 and 6, there is mounted an engine and gear box assembly, generally indicated by 7 and a driver's seat (not shown). A steering shaft is indicated at 8, and a gear shift linkage at 9.
To the rear of the intermediate transverse frame member 5, there extends a pair of connecting frame members 11 which extend longitudinally of the vehicle and close to its centre line 12 as far as a rear frame assembly 13. Between the rear frame assembly 1 3 and the subsidiary transverse frame member 6, there extend a pair of wheel supporting frame members 14, each of which has a forward generally longitudinally extending portion 15, and an outwardly bent portion 1 6 and an inwardly inclined and rearmost portion 1 7. Between the portion 1 6 and 17, there is mounted a support 18 for a bearing 19 for a half shaft 21 carrying one of the wheels 2.
Drive from the engine and gear box assembly 7 is taken by a chain drive 22 to a sprocket 23 on a transversely extending shaft 24 which terminates adjacent the centre line 12 of the vehicle in a spur gear 25 meshing with a similar spur 26 mounted on a shaft supported in bearings 27 on the frame members 11. The shaft also is connected by universal joints 28 to the half shafts 21.
It is conventional in karts for the final chain drive to be taken to a solid back axle, and the particular configuration as described is adopted because of the possibility of flexing of the wheel supporting members 14 leading to movement of the wheels 2 relative to the portions of the frame supporting the engine. Accordingly, the back axle is provided with the universal joints 28 and drive has to be taken to a point between the universal joints which is solid with the frame at 11.
It will be seen that the frame is supported on the rear wheels 2 by means of the support members 14, and by virtue of the configuration of these members, some flexibility is imparted to this support although the members 14 would appear to be neither elastic or pivoted. The sections 1 5 of the members 14 resist this movement in a torsional mode, and the portions 1 6 in bending and the portions 1 7 in combined bending and torsion.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
