Abstract

A hygienic absorbent dressing consisting of an enlarged pad, formed by absorbent material 1 coated by two edged joined strips 2 and 3, one of which is of a relatively absorbent material and the other is of an impermeable material, the pad having in the face corresponding to the absorbent coating a projection 5 like a stem formed by an absorbent material coated by said relatively absorbent strip. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hygienic Absorbent Dressing The present invention relates to an Improved absorbent dressing, more particularly, of the kind designed for womens-3 use, i.e. a hygienic absorbent dressing used during menstruation, and of the pad type, i.e. of the kind which consists of an enlarged pad comprising an absorbent material coated by a lining made up of two edged joined strips, one strip being in contact with the body and being relatively absorbent, while the other strip being in contact with the underclothes and being impermeable, the underclothes retaining the position of absorbent dressing.
There are two kinds of pad absorbent dressing.
There are those which do not have positioning means and those which incorporate some means for positioning the pads. The second type of pads use an adhesive area which is pressed against the clothes. The adhesive area has initially a protective strip which is first removed before applying the pad to the clothes. The absorbent dressings of the first type of pad show a serious inconvenience in that they can be easily moved between the body and the underclothes, which can result in annoyance and discomfort. The absorbent dressings of the second type of pad can also move between the body and the clothes, although they move about less than the first type of pad. However, the adhesive area causes the undesirable defect called "pilling" on the fabric of the underclothes which remains even after the clothes are washed.
Pad absorbent dressings also show the inconvenience of body discharge which, when discharged by a respective body opening onto the dressing contiguous to the body, causes irritation to the external sensitive parts around the body opening, thereby increasing the already stated annoyance and discomfort.
Another type of absorbent dressing is known, in which a cylindrical absorbent body is totally inserted into a body opening. However, this type of absorbent dressing can be quite uncomfortable for many users, owing to its total immobility and its rigidity.
According to a first aspect of the invention, an absorbent dressing comprises a pad having an impermeable layer and an absorbent plug outwardly projecting from the layer.
Preferably the absorbent dressing commprises a pad, which additionally comprises an absorbent layer between the impermeable layer and the absorbent plug, the absorbent plug outwardly projecting from the absorbent layer.
According to a second aspect of the invention, an absorbent dressing consisting of an enlarged pad comprises a material of an absorbent nature coated by a lining made up with two edged joined strips, of which one strip, which is absorbent, contacts the user's body, and the other strip, which is impermeable, contacts the underclothes, the underclothes keeping the absorbent dressing positioned, wherein the strip of the absorbent dressing in contact with the user's body has a plug, shaped like a stem, and which is formed by absorbent material covered by a relatively absorbent strip, the plug being adapted to be inserted into a respective body opening of a user.
Having carefully studied the problems, I have come to a fully satisfactory answer to those problems with the absorbent dressing of the invention which is of mixed type, i.e. an externally applied pad, which is provided with a plug which can be partially inserted into a body opening. The absorbent dressing thus remains totally immovable without the inconvenience mentioned above and also avoids at the same time any irritation as mentioned above. Pad-type absorbent dressings have likewise been used in the medical field for users of both sexes, who are affected by anal conditions, for example haemorrhoids. These users have also suffered the same inconveniences and annoyance previously mentioned with regard to the woman's menstrual cycle. The absorbent dressing of the invention can also be used in the treatment of anal conditions. The absorbent dressing has fore-mentioned advantages of immobility, and anti-irritant and at the same time allows anal conditions to be treated.
The inside of the absorbent dressing of the invention has a plug, which is like a stem formed by an absorbent material coated by an absorbent strip. The plug is designed to be inserted into a respective body opening of the user. The plug prevents movement of the absorbent dressing whilst cooperating with the clothes.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an absorbent dressing having the shape when in use; and Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the absorbent dressing.
The drawings show an absorbent dressing A, which is an elongate rectangular pad comprising a filler 1 of an absorbent material. The filler 1 is sandwiched between a lining 2 which consists of a smooth absorbent strip, and an external impermeable strip 3. The lining 2 contacts the body of the user, and the external strip 3 contacts the underclothes. The absorbent dressing has conventional laminar extensions 4, which are formed by overlapping extensions of the lining 2 and strip 3 respectively. The extensions 4 are designed to be placed together with the rest of the absorbent dressing, between the body of the user and the underclothes, thus preventing movement of the absorbent dressing.
As shown in the drawings, the lining 2 of the absorbent dressing has a plug 5; which is like a stem and which, when used, is at least partially inserted into a corrsponding body opening in order to prevent movement of the absorbent dressing with respect to the body.
The plug 5 has a flattened longitudinal profile, as shown by the solid lines in the drawings.
Preferably, the plug has a substantially arcuate free edge. The flattened plug is specially provided for absorbing menses. The plug is made up with the same filler 1 as that of the pad and is covered by the strip of the lining 2. The absorbent dressing having the arcuate and flattened plug 5 is inserted into a body opening of the user. In this manner, the absorbent dressing is kept static. The plug 5 allows body fluid to flow into the absorbent dressing i.e. into the filler 1 of the pad part of the absorbent dressing. The fluid flow is absorbed by the material of the filler, thus avoiding leakage and irritation to the body parts as already mentioned hereinbefore.
Alternatively, the plug may have substantially cylindrical profile as shown by the dotted lines 6 in the drawings. Preferably, the plug 6 has a higher rigidity. The absorbent dressing having a cylindrical plug is designed to be used for medical purposes by users of both sexes for the treatment of rectal conditions, for example haemorrhoids.
The plug is inserted into the rectum, thus preventing movement of the absorbent dressing.
The plug additionally allows the application of a corresponding medicine, for example an ointment, liquid, etc. for the treatment of the rectal condition. Good results can be expected of such a treatment because of the static position of the absorbent dressing.
The plug 5, 6 can be integral with the pad of the absorbent dressing as seen in Figure 2-3. The plug filler is a filler extension of the pad part of the absorbent dressing and the strip of the lining 2 is a continuation of the strip covering the filler in the pad part of the absorbent dressing. The strip defines a welling related to the plug of the absorbent dressing. It is also envisaged that the plug 5, 6 can be detachable and consequently formed from a portion of an absorbent filler and its associated wrapping strip. In this embodiment, the plug would be attached to the pad part of the absorbent dressing by suitable means.
