Abstract

A bite indicator for use in rod and line fishing comprises a bobbin 10 arranged to be suspended from a fishing line 17 and located within a transparent housing 11 adapted to be secured to the ground. The transparent housing protects the bobbin against wind and rain while enabling any movement thereof to be observed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Bite indicators for use in rod and line fishing This invention relates to bite indicators for use in rod and line fishing.
Bite indicators are known consisting of a bobbin which is suspended from the fishing line but such bite indicators suffer from the disadvantage that they are blown about by the wind so that it is difficult to decide whether the movement of the bobbin in fact indicates a bite.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a bite indicator that overcomes this disadvantage. It is also an object of the invention to provide a bite indicator which enables the extent of movement of the indicator to be measured.
According to the invention, there is provided a bite indicator for use in rod and line fishing, comprising a bobbin adapted to be suspended from the fishing line and located within a transparent housing adapted to be secured to the ground. The transparent housing protects the bobbin against wind and rain while enabling any movement thereof to be observed.
According to a further feature of the invention, the wall of the transparent housing may be calibrated to enable the extent of movement of the bobbin to be measured.
According to one embodiment, the transparent housing consists of a cylinder closed at both ends, the bobbin being attached to a line which passes through a clip on its free end for attachment of the fishing line.
According to another embodiment, the transparent housing consists of a cylinder that is open at its upper end, the upper end of the bobbin being provided with a clip for attachment of the fishing line. This embodiment enables the rod to be located nearerthe ground.
The bobbin may be one that glows to enable the indicator to be used at night.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying draw ings, wherein: Figure 1 illustrates one embodiment of a bite indicator according to the invention, Figure 2 shows the indicator in use, and Figure 3 illustrates another embodiment of a bite indicator according to the invention.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, the bite indicator comprises a bobbin 10 which is suspended within a transparent cylinder 11, advantageously made of plastics material. The cylinder 11 is closed at its lower end by a removable cap 12, advantageously made of metal or plastics material, which carries a spike 13 for supporting the device in the ground, and at its upper end by a removable cap 14 advantageously made of metal or plastics material. The bobbin 10 is attached to a line 15 which passes through the cap 14 and is provided at its free end with a clip 16forattachmentofthefishing line 17.
The wall of the cylinder 11 is calibrated as indicated at18.
Figure 2 shows the bite indicator in use with the bobbin suspended from the fishing line 17 by engagement of the line with the clip 16.
The embodiment illustrated in Figure 3 is similar to that illustrated in Figure 2 except that the cylinder 11 is open at its upper end and the fishing line 17 is secured to the clip 16 which in this case is secured to the upper end of the bobbin 10. A cord 19 is secured between the lower end of the bobbin 10 and the cap 12.
The bobbin 10 may be a glow bobbin for use at night.
A bite indicator according to the invention can be produced relatively cheaply, it is capable of giving a precise indication of a bite and is substantially unaffected by wind and rain.
1. A bite indicator for use in rod and line fishing, comprising a bobbin adapted to be suspended from the fishing line and located within a transparent housing adapted to be secured to the ground.
2. A bite indicator as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the wall of the transparent housing is calibrated to enable the extent of movement of the bobbin to be measured.
3. A bite indicator as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the transparent housing consists of a cylinder closed at both ends, the bobbin being attached to a line which passes through a clip on its free end for attachment of the fishing line.
4. A bite indicator as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein the transparent housing consists of a cylindex that is open at its upper end, the upper end of the bobbin being provided with a clip for attachment of the fishing line.
5. A bite indicator as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the bobbin is one that glows to enable the indicator to be used at night.
6. A bite indicator substantially as herein before described with reference to Figure 1 oftheaccom- panying drawing.
7. A bite indicator substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 3 of the accompanying drawing.
