Abstract
A method is provided for applying a coating to the surface of a substrate which comprises applying an adherent coating of a liquid chemically self- vulcanising rubber based coating composition to said surface, applying to said coating a layer of a woven or non woven fibrous material and applying a further coating of liquid chemically self- vulcanising rubber based coating composition to said applied fibrous layer.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Coating process
This invention relates to a method of providing a substrate with a coating, for exam ple a protective coating.
The use of liquid rubber based coating compositions for providing protective coatings is well known.
For example, it is well known to apply, for example by painting or spraying, a protective impervious rubber based membrane to the internal surfaces of vessels such as tanks, to floors and to pipes.
It is, however, difficult to obtain by conventional spraying or painting techniques a layer which is sufficiently thick and strong to withstand abrasion, accidental damage or adverse environmental conditions.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of applying a coating to the surface of a substrate which comprises applying an adherent coating of a liquid chemically self-vulcanising rubber coating composition to said surface, applying to said coating a layer of a woven or non woven fibrous material and applying a further coating of liquid chemically self-vulcanising rubber based coating composition to said applied fibrous layer.
Preferably, the coating composition comprises a solution or suspension of a natural or synthetic rubber, for example neoprene rubber.
The nature of the fibrous material is not unduly critical, but it is preferred that the layer is selfsupporting in order to reinforce the applied coating to a sufficiently high degree. Examples of suitable fibrous materials include polyesters, polyamides, for example nylon, rayon, cotton and fibre glass. These materials may, for example be applied in the form of a non-woven felt, in the form of cords, or in the form of a woven fabric, preferably of an open weave.
The coating material may be applied by any convenient means, for example by hand brushing, but it is preferable to apply the liquid coating composition by a spraying operation.
Although adequately thick cdatings can be achieved by applying only two coatings of rubber based liquid coating composition with a single interposed layer of fibrous material, greater thicknesses can be built up by adding further coatings of coating composition preferably with additional interposed layers of fibrous material.
As indicated, the coating composition is selfvulcanising, i.e. it can include conventional vulcanising agents and accelerators, for example tetramethyl thiuran disulphide and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and similarly, conventional solvents may be used, such as, for example trichloroethylene and trichlor ethane.
Where the liquid rubber based coating composition is of the two component type, the components may be mixed prior to application and then, for example, sprayed using a single jet spray gun or alternatively, the components may be mixed during the spraying operation.
In order to ensure adequate adhesion between the srst layer of rubber based coating composition and the substrate, the substrate surface is preferably keyed by wire brushing, sanding or shot blasting and then cleaned, preferably using a chlorinated organic solvent. Subsequently, the clean surface may be primed, for example using a dilute rubber solution.
The following Example illustrates the process of the invention:
Example
A concrete floor surface was cleaned using a trichloroethane solvent and then primed with a liquid rubber priming composition sold by Pang
Chemical Vulcanizers Limited under the trade name "Pang Hartol Primer". When dry, a second liberal coat of Pang Primer was applied.
A layer of Pangit liquid A & B chemical self vulcanizing rubber also sold by Pang Chemical
Vulcanizers Limited was then applied to the primed surface. A woven glass fibre fabric mesh was then laid over the layer of rubber based coating composition and finally a further layer of Pangit liquid A & B applied over the glass fibre layer. The Pangit liquid A & B was applied using a single canister single jet De Vilbis spray gun the two components (A & B) of the liquid rubber composition being mixed before charging to the spray canister.
Other methods of applying the rubber based liquid can be used in accordance with the invention, for example hand brushing.

2. A method according to Claim 1 wherein the coating composition comprises a solution or suspension of a natural or synthetic rubber.
3. A method according to any preceding claim wherein the layer of fibrous material is in the form of a non-woven felt, in the form of cords or in the form of a woven fabric.
4. A method according to any preceding claim wherein the liquid coating composition is applied by a spraying operation.
