Abstract
A tubular package or carton 10 is manufactured by bending corrugated board 12, which may be either double or single faced, to a tubular shape and joining overlapping edges 16, 18 by adhesive, stapling or stitching. With single-faced board, the exposed corrugations may be adhered to a preferably pre-printed outer tube 14, and the package 10 is preferably formed around a heated mandrel. Plastics or tin-plate end closures may be provided. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to tubular products
The present invention concerns improvements in or relating to tubular products.
In this specification the phrase corrugated board is intended to mean a sheet like paper product including a base sheet, a further sheet fluted to form substantially regularly spaced corrugations attached to said base sheet at the troughs of the corrugations and, optionally, a top paper sheet attached to the crests of the corrugations. The combination of a base sheet with a corrugated sheet, that is excluding a top sheet, will be referred to as a single faced corrugated board. The term chip-board when used in the specification is intended to mean a flexible relatively thin board-like sheet of paper product.
According to the present invention there is provided a tubular product comprising a corrugated board deformed to a substantially tubular shape with the regions at its longitudinal edges joined together.
Preferably the corrugated board is single faced, is shaped into a tube with its corrugations outermost and is covered with a second tube of paper or chip-board.
Alternatively the corrugated board is double faced.
Preferably the corrugations extend lengthwise of the tube. The corrugations may extend transversely of the tube or may be arranged spirally.
Preferably the corrugated board tube is formed by crushing the corrugations along a longitudinally extending area at one edge of the board and overlapping said edge by the other edge of the board which is fixed thereto by adhesive or other suitable means.
Preferably the chip-board tube is formed around the corrugated tube and glued to the crest of the corrugations. Conveniently the chip-board tube is printed prior to formation. It is desirable that one end region of the chip-board overlaps and is fixed to the other end region.
The tubular product may be provided with top and bottom members which may be of tin plate or plastics material. The bottom may be formed by a suitably formed chip-board or corrugated board fixed thereto.
Especially where a chip-board or corrugated board base is provided the chip-board tube or the corrugated board tube or both are formed with a height greater than the intended height of the finished tube such that the oversize portion may be folded inwardly to assist in fixing the bottom member.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing a tubular product comprising deforming corrugated board into a substantially tubular shape and joining together the regions at its longitudinal edges.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a sheet of single faced corrugated board prior to assembly into a tube;
Figure 2 shows a sheet of chip-board priorto assembly into a tube;
Figure 3 shows a transverse cross-section through an assembled tube;
Figure 4 shows a sheet of double-faced corrugated board prior to assembly into a tube; and
Figure 5 shows a transverse cross-section through an assembled tube.
Atubular container 10 (Figure 3) is manufactured from an inner tube of single faced corrugated board 12 surrounded by an outer tube of chip-board 14, the corrugated inner tube 12 comprising a rectangular sheet of single faced corrugated board rolled into a tubular form with the transverse edges 16, 18 thereof overlapping. The flutes or corrugations of the board are arranged to run in the longitudinal direction of the tube and the chip-board tube 14 is formed around the corrugated tube and glued to the crests of the corrugations. The transverse edges 22, 24 of the chip-board are overlapped and the overlap is arranged to be circumferentially spaced from the overlap of the corrugated tube.
The method of manufacturing a tube according to the invention comprises cutting a rectangular sheet of single faced corrugated board with the corrugations of the board running in the direction intended eventually to form the longitudinal direction of the tube. The width of the sheet is equal to the intended height of the finished tube and the length of the sheet, i.e. the dimension transverse to the direction of the corrugations is equal to the circumference of the finished tube plus an additional amount corresponding to the overlap. An area at one end of the corrugated sheet with a dimension equal to the width of the overlap is subjected to pressure to crush, deform and flatten the corrugations.The sheet is then rolled into a tube around a mandrel and adhesive is applied to the flattened corrugations such that when the unflattened opposite transverse edge of the sheet overlies the crushed corrugations a longitudinally extending joint of overlap is formed.
Afurther rectangular sheet is formed from chipboard which may be pre-printed the width of the sheet being equal to the height of the finished tube and the length being equal to the outside circumference of the tube with an additional length to provide an overlap. Adhesive is applied to the crests of the corrugations of the corrugated tube and the chipboard is wrapped around the tube. Adhesive is applied also to the overlap area adjacent one transverse edge of the chip-board such that the area adjacent the othertransverse edge is firmly fixed thereto. The overlap of the corrugated tube and the overlap of the chip-board are circumferentially spaced.
The open ended tube can then be formed into a container by adding end caps which may be flanged saucer-shaped members preformed from plastics material or tin-plate. Alternatively, especially the base of the tube can be formed from a chip-board or corrugated board blank glued to the tube.
In another embodiment shown in Figures 4 and 5 a tubular container 110 (Figure 5) is manufactured from a rectangular sheet of double faced corrugated board 112 rolled into a tubular form about a heated mandrel (not shown) with the transverse edges 116, 118 thereof overlapping. The flutes or corrugations of the board are arranged to run in the longitudinal direction of the tube.
The method of manufacturing a tube according to this embodiment comprises cutting a rectangular sheet of double faced corrugated board with the corrugations of the board running in the direction intended eventually to form the longitudinal direction of the tube. The width of the sheet is equal to the intended height of the finished tube and the length of the sheet, i.e. the dimension transverse to the direction of the corrugations is equal to the circum ferenceofthefinishedtube plus an additional amount corresponding to the overlap area 120. The sheet is then rolled into a tube around a mandrel and adhesive is applied to the area 120 such that when this area overlies the opposite transverse edge area of the sheet and a longitudinally extending joint or overlap is formed.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention, for example the means of fixing the overlaps could be stapling or stitching; the corrugations of the corrugated board could be arranged transversely of the axis of the tube or spirally; the width of the chip-board sheet or the corrugated sheet or both could be greater than the intended height of the finished tube such that the oversize portion at the bottom of the tube can be folded inwardly to assist in fixing the base of the tube.
