Abstract

A roof-rack cover (1) has a hood (2) connected at one edge (4) to a base (3) and secured so as to surround a load (13) on a roof-rack (11) by means of a peripheral draw-string (6) and transverse, elastic cords (9), (10), which also permit the cover to be adjusted to different sizes of load normally carried on the roof-rack. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A Cover for Motor Vehicle Roof-racks The present invention relates to covers for motor vehicle roof-racks.
In particular, the invention concerns adjustable covers for motor vehicle roof-racks, particularly, but not exclusively, for motor cars.
Excess luggage which is carried on a motor vehicle roof-rack is generally covered by a tarpaulin or plastics sheet to afford some protection against the weather. Such a sheet is often lashed onto the roof-rack by cord and generally does not completely enclose the load, giving rise, during travel, to persistent flapping of the sheet which at high speeds, or in windy conditions, adversely affects the stabil'ity of the vehicle by acting like a "sail".
The object of the present invention is to provide a motor vehicle roof-rack cover which is adjustable so as to provide a secure, tight fitting, weather-proof covering for different sizes of load of the kind generallly carried on a motor vehicle roof-rack.
According to the present invention there is provided an adjustable motor vehicle roof-rack cover of flexible, waterproof material comprising a hood portion which is connected with a base portion along one edge of the latter, the hood portion having peripheral tensioning means which, in use, hold the periphery of the hood in place beneath the edges of the roof-rack, at least partly enclosing the base portion and covering any load resting thereon.
The hood portion and the base portion may be connected by a seam weld or the like but, preferably they are releasably inter-connected by co-operating fastening means on respective cooperating edges. In a preferred embodiment the fastening means comprise snap-fasteners.
The cover may be made from light-weight tarpaulin or a plastics material but, preferably, is made from a rubber-backed, heavy-duty nylon fabric for strength.
One embodiment of the invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying, purely diagrammatic, drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of an adjustable motor vehicle roof-rack cover according to the present invention, prior to being secured to a motor vehicle roof-rack, and Figure 2 is a sectional view, similar to Figure 1, with the cover secured to the roof-rack.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a motor vehicle roof-rack cover, generally indicated 1, comprising a hood portion 2 and a rectangular base portion 3, both, in this example, made from a rubber-backed, heavy-duty nylon fabric. The hood portion 2 and the base portion 3 are releasably interconnected by means of cooperating snap-fasteners (not shown) along respective co-operating edges, generally indicated 4.
The hood portion 2 has a peripheral hem 5 (shown in a broken line in Figure 1) housing a draw-string 6, and two transverse casings 7, 8, respectively, which extend perpendicular to the peripheral hem 5 and house respective elastic cords 9, 10, each having respective terminal hooks 9a, 1 Oa externally of opposite edges of the hood portion 2.
When in use, the base portion 3 is laid on a roof-rack 11 of a motor vehicle 12, such as a car, and the luggage 1 3 is placed thereon. The hood portion 2 is fastened to the base 3 and pulled over the luggage 13 until the periphery surrounds the roof-rack 11, the draw-string 6 is pulled tight and secured so that the periphery of the hood 2 is tensioned and held in place beneath the edges of the roof-rack, as shown in Figure 2. The transverse cords 9, 10 are hooked at each end to opposing sides of the roof-rack 11 for additional security.
A roof-rack cover as described above provides an adjustable, tight-fitting, weather-proof covering which is securely held by the draw-string 6 and the transverse cords 9, 10, thus preventing any flapping when the car is in motion.
Claims
1. An adjustable motor vehicle roof-rack cover of flexible, waterproof material comprising a hood portion which is connected with a base portion along one edge of the latter, the hood portion having peripheral tensioning means which, in use, hold the periphery of the hood in place beneath the edges of the roof-rack, at least partly enclosing the base portion and covering any load resting thereon.
2. A roof-rack cover as claimed in Claim 1, in which the peripheral tensioning means comprise a draw-string located within a hem around the edge of the hood portion.
3. A roof-rack cover as claimed in Claim 1, in which the hood portion and the base-portion are releasably interconnected by co-operating fastening means on respective co-operating edges.
4. A roof-rack cover as claimed in Claim 3, in which the fastening means comprise snapfasteners.
5. A roof-rack cover as claimed in Claim 1, in which the hood has transverse tensioning means engageable with opposing sides of the roof rack.
6. A roof-rack cover as claimed in Claim 5 in which said transverse tensioning means comprise at least one elastic cord, with terminal hooks, housed within a respective casing transverse the hood portion and perpendicular to the peripheral hem.
7. A roof-rack cover as claimed in any of the preceding claims, in which the cover is made from
