Abstract

The body (10) and lid (12) of a container have respective elements (20, 22) which are secured together. If the elements are subsequently found to be unsecured, this indicates that the container has been opened. The securing of the elements may be by welding or other sealing (Figures 4,7 and 8); by rivetting (Figure 5); by a barbed member (26) on one element irreversibly pushed through an aperture (28) in the other element (Figure 3); or by a member on one element passed through an aperture in the other element and thereafter deformed to prevent its withdrawal (Figure 6). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Container having pilfer indication means This invention relates to containers, and more particularly to containers having means for indicating whether or not the container has been opened.
According to the present invention there is provided a container comprising an open topped body and lid therefor, the lid being a frictional or resilient snap fit onto the body, portions in the region of the rim of the body and lid projecting outwardly to provide a pair of overlapping elements which are secured together so as to rupturably to join the lid and body to provide an indication as to whether or not the container has been opened.
In a preferred form the rim of the body is turned outwardly and downwardly to define a downwardly opening channel around the rim, the lid also being provided with a peripheral downwardly opening channel portion which fits over the body rim channel when the lid is in place, the outer edge of the lid channel having a return lip which engages under the outer edge of the body rim channel and provides a resilient shap fit of the lid on the body, portions of the free edges of the two channels being out-turned to provide said pair of overlapping elements.
Preferably the return lip of the lid channel is interrupted in the region of said elements. Preferably more than one said pair of elements are provided at different positions around the container. The container may be polygonal in horizontal cross-section, for example rectangular, or preferably square, with said elements provided in one or more corner regions. The securing of the elements may be for example by welding or other sealing; by rivetting; by a barbed member on one element irreversibly pushed through an aperture in the other; or by a member on one element passing through an aperture in the other element and thereafter deformed to prevent its withdrawal. The rupturing of the join between lid and body may be rupturing the connection between the elements, but is preferably by removal of one or both of a said pair of elements.
In order that the invention may be more clearly unerstood, various embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a side view of the top portion of a container and lid, Figure 2 shows a plan view of the lid, Figures 3 to 6 show cross-sectional views through a corner region of the container and lid showing different methods of joining the elements, and Figures 7 and 8 show similar cross-sectional corner views of alternative embodiments.
Referring to the drawings and firstly to Figures 1 to 3; the container comprises a body 10 and lid 12, both being injection moulded from thermoplastic material. The container is square in plan, having straight sides with rounded corners. As can be seen more clearly from Figure 3; the upper rim of the body is turned outwardly and downwardly to provide a downwardly opening channel portion 14. The lid 12 is similarly provided with a peripheral downwardly opening channel portion 16 which fits over the channel portion 14 of the body when the lid is in place. Along the straight sides of the container the free edge of the lid channel porton 16 extends below the free edge of the body channel portion 14, as shown at 17 (in broken lines in Figure 3), and is provided with a return lip 18 which engages under the free edge of the channel 14 and provides a snap fit of the lid on the body.However, the return lip is omitted in the corner regions, and the free edges of the two channel portions are out-turned to provide tabs 20, 22 respectively which overlap when the lid is in place. As can be seen from Figure 2, these tabs are arrowhead shaped in plan, so that they fall within the rectangle defined by a continuation of the straight sides of the lid in the rounded corner regions, and are joined to their respective channels by narrow necks 24.
The overlapping tabs are secured together so as to rupturably join the lid and body. This securing may be by a variety of means, some of which are illustrated in Figurs 3 to 6. Figure 3, which has already been referred to, shows the tab 20 having a flat upstanding arrowhead shaped element 26 which is forced resiliently through an aperture 28 in the tab 22, and is prevented from returning by the barbs (shoulders) of the arrowhead. This is also illustrated on one of the pairs of tabs in Figures 1 and 2. In Figure 4 the tabs are shown as being heat or high frequency welded by welding jaws 28, 30. Figure 5 shows the tabs secured together by means of a rivet 32.Figure 6 shows the tabs secured together by a downwardly projecting element 34 on the tab 22 passing through an aperture 36 in the tab 20, and then deformed by a heat or high frequentyforming tool 38 from ths shape shown at 34A to the shape shown at 34B, so that it cannot be withdrawn through the aperture. Figures 1 and 2 shown one pair of tabs secured together as in Figure 3, but it should be understood that all the pairs of tabs will be secured, whether by the arrangement of Figure 3, or of any of Figures 3 to 6 or any other suitable method.
It will thus be seen that the tabs are essentially premanently secured together. The container is opened by removing some or all of the pairs of tabs, by rupturing them at the narrow necks 24. It can thus be easily seen whether or not the container has been opened.
Instead of physically removing both tabs of a pair, it may be arranged that one tab only of the pair is separated from its respective channel, or the connection between a pair of tabs is itself ruptured instead of separating the tabs from their channels. However, these alternatives are not preferred, since they do not provide such an obvious indication as to whether the container has been opened.
The container may have other conventional features known in the art. For example, the container body may be of downwardly convergent shape, so that empty bodies may be nested one inside another, and to this end they may be provided with denesting devices such as the corner ribs 40, shown in Figure 1, the lower edges of which rest on the rim of the container body next below.
Referring to Figure 7; the rim of the body 10 is not formed as an inverted channel, but instead is slightly out-turned to provide a lip 40, which co-operates with a lip 42 in the inverted channel portion 16 of the lid to give a snap-fit. An out-turned tab or continuous peripheral flange 44 at the edge of the channel portion 16 overlies a similar tab or flange 46 projecting from the wall of the container body in the region of but slightly below the lip 40. The tabs or flanges 44,46 are connected together, as with the earlier embodiments, and may be detachable from the lid and body by rupturing the material along a line of weakening, in this case a series of slits or a line of perforations 48.
In Figure 8, neither the body nor the lid has an inverted channel portion at the rim, but merely an out-turned peripheral flange 50, 52 respectively.
These overlap each other and are secured together as indicated in the earlier embodiments. The flange can be torn away along a line of weakening provided by longitudinal grooves 54 in the flanges, and the lid can thereafter be removed and replaced as a push fit into the container body.

Claims (16)

1. A container comprising an open topped body and lid therefor, the lid being a frictional or resilient snap fit onto the body, portions in the region of the rim of the body and lid projecting outwardly to provide a pair of overlapping elements which are secured together so as rupturably to join the lid and body to provide an indication as to whether or not the container has been opened.
2. A container according to claim 1 wherein the rim of the body is turned outwardly and downwardly to define a downwardly opening channel around the rim, the lid also being provided with a peripheral downwardly opening channel portion which fits over the body rim channel when the lid is in place, the outer edge of the lid channel having a return lip which engages under the outer edge of the body rim channel and provides a resilient snap fit of the lid on the body, portions of the free edges of the two channels being out-turned to provide said pair of overlapping elements.
3. A container according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said elements each take the form of a strip extending around the periphery of the lid and body respectively.
4. A container according to claim 3 wherein said strip of joined elements is detachable from the lid and body along a line of weakening.
5. A container according to claim 2, wherein said elements are confined to part only of the container periphery and the return lip of the lid channel is interrupted in the region of said elements.
6. A container according to any one of claims 1,2 and 5 wherein more than one said pair of elements are provided at different positions around the container.
7. A container according to any one of claims 1, 2, and 6 which is polygonal in horizontal crosssection, with said elements provided in one or more corner regions.
8. A container according to claim 7 which is rectangular in horizontal cross-section,
9. A container according to claim 8 which is square in horizontal cross-section.
10. A container according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the securing of the elements is by welding or other sealing.
11. A container according to any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the securing of the elements is by rivetting.
12. A container according to any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the securing of the elements is by a barbed member on one tab irreversibly pushed through an aperture in the other.
13. A container according to any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the securing of the elements is by a member on one element passing through an aperture in the other element and thereafter deformed to prevent its withdrawal.
14. A container according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the rupturing of the join between lid and body is by removal of one or both of a said pair of elements.
15. A container according to any one of claims 1 to 3 and 4 to 13 wherein the rupturing of the join between the lid and body is by rupturing the connection between the elements.
16. A container substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
