Toothed gearing. -- In toothed reduction gearing, the pinion and gear shafts 8, 9 are mounted at one or both ends in spherical bearings 14 in frames 11 rocking in fulcra 12 so placed that the moments due to the driving torque are balanced. The toothed members can thus tilt as is usual to equalize the stresses throughout the lengths of the gears, but must always remain accurately in mesh. Springs 15 controlled by screw stops 17 reduce shock. Where divided gear-wheels 6 are used, they are arranged loosely on their shaft and are differentially interconnected by ball-ended levers 18 which are carried loosely between circumferential springs in a plate 10 fast on the shaft, or, in a modification, all the gear parts are fast but the pinion shaft 8 may slide axially in its bearings. Flexible couplings 26, 27, which may or may not provide for axial play, connect the gear to the driving and driven shafts, respectively.
