Cutting and breaking appliances for capsules. -In a machine for removing metallic capsules from the necks of hottles &c., particularly from the necks of empty wine bottles, in which pivotally and resiliently mounted rotating cutters or like tools are adapted to engage the necks of the bottles, the holders f carrying the cutters f<1> are pivoted at their rear ends f<2> to peripheral lugs e<1> on a disk e, and have inwardly-projecting radially-arranged arms which are adapted to move inwardly when a bottle is placed in the machine, thus causing the holders f to turn on their pivots and bring the cutters f<2> into contact with the neck of the bottle. The holders f are pivoted at their inner rear ends by projections f<3> to radial lugs on a ring g, which is loose on the axially-movable shaft h and pressed outwardly against the nose-piece h<1> by a spring j. A spring k presses the disk e forwards and holds an inner clutch member d out of engagement with the clutch surface c<1> on the driving-pulley c. On pressing a hottle against the nose-piece h<1>, the shaft h is moved rearwardly and the spring j compressed, causing the cutters f<1> to move inwards on to the capsule; further movement of the shaft h compresses the spring k and puts the clutch d into engagement. The fragments of metal foil fall down a shoot at the bottom of the guard l. Should a bottle break, the pressure is at once released from the nosepiece h<1> and the parts become disengaged and assume their normal stationary position. The shaft h is prevented from rotating, and its forward movement is limited, by a transverse pin h<3> engaging in slots b<3> in the end of the fixed sleeve b. The cutters f<1> are arranged side by side in the holders f with their cutting-edges f<4> extending in line longitudinally over the nosepiece h<1> and are capable of separate radial movement under the action of springs f<5>. The nose-piece h<1> may be made removable so that it can be taken off when the machine is used for removing capsules from bottles which have not been previously opened.
