Tell-tale apparatus.- An apparatus for indicating the heights of fluids, or signalling the varying positions of sluice gates, penstocks, gasometers, and lifts, or for operating as a ship's telegraph, comprises a rotary or rectilinearly moving arm adapted to operate in succession the two - way switches of lamps or other visible indicators in such a manner that the completion of the circuit of one indicator breaks the circuit of the previous indicator. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a rectilinearly moving carriage K, controlled by a float N<2> and a counterweight O<2>, carries an arm K<1> adapted to engage in succession the forked arms P' ... P<5> of two-way switches R<1> ... R<5>, the arms P' ... P<5> being put in unstable equilibrium by means of springs or weights. The switches R<1>. R<2>, R<3>, Fig. 1, are provided with four fixed contacts, two of which A, Dare connected to the positive and negative leads of the supply respectively, while the others C, B are connected to the fixed contacts of the preceding and succeeding switches as shown.
