Abstract
6299. Conradi, H. March 12. Wheel - guards and obstruction - removers.- Each wheel-guard 16 is fitted on its rear side with arms carrying pins or rollers 3<a> which normally rest as shown in Fig. VI in seats of brackets 4<c> carried by rods 24 secured to arms 23 on the swivelling axle-end, but which are pushed rearwardly off their seats to allow the guard to fall when an obstruction is met. The lower end of the guard is preferably bent outwardly as shown and fitted with one or more rollers, and the whole guard or its lower end may be of rubber, leather, or other elastic material. The guard is adapted to be returned to its normal position by the driver through a hand-lever 17, the lower pin or roller 3" being lifted by a lever 28 connected to the lever 17 by rods and levers 27, 26, 18, whereupon the upper pin or roller 3<a> is pushed into its seat by a rod 29. To enable the driver to drop the guard, a lever 32 pivoted to the bracket 4<c>, and connected to the lever 17 by a rod 31, carries a rod 33 adapted to pull the lower pin or roller 3<a> rearwardly off its seat, a slot in the rod 18 allowing this operation to take place before the lever 26 is moved. In a modification, Fig. XVII, the guard is made in two telescoping parts, the lower part only being caused to fall when an obstruction is met. A guard similarly constructed may be used to cover the space between the wheels at the front of the vehicle.
