Abstract

3107. Flower, J. W. Feb. 6. Bottles, washing.-In bottle-soaking machines of the kind in which the bottles are carried through a tank by endless bands, the bands are fitted with bottle-holding trays or shelves, each of which receives a number of bottles placed end to end, and after the soaking operation permits them to roll on to a conveyer or on to the shelves of a similar adjacent soaking- machine. Figs. 1 and 2 show a construction of machine in accordance with the invention. The bottles are placed end to end on the trays of the first conveyer and are carried through the first compartment of the tank to the point 10, where they fall by gravity on to the trays of the second conveyer; they are then carried through the second compartment to the point 11, where they fall on to the delivery belt 12. Labels and the like removed from the bottles fall through the curved grids 13 into the bottom of the compartments. The trays are formed of obtuse-angled plates, one arm of which is attached to the conveyer chains so that the other forms an inclined shelf or ledge for receiving the bottles. The chains are driven intermittently so that successive trays are arrested at the loading stage by means of worm gear 22, Fig. 2, actuated from a main driving-pulley 14. Pins 25 on one of the chain driving-wheels are engaged successively by an arm 26 of the clutchoperating lever. A momentary operation of the handle 18 first withdraws the arm 26, then engages the clutch, next permits the spring 20 to disengage the clutch, and lastly interposes the arm 26 in the path of the rest stop 25. The whole of the driving-mechanism is mounted on a plate 29 which can be adjusted on the plate 30 by means of bolts 31 for chain-tensioning purposes. Doors 37 and a connecting-pipe with a cock 39 are fitted at the base of the compartments. An overflow pipe 40 is provided to permit a constant circulation of liquid through the tanks.
