Lift valves.-A valve a for supplying steam to locomotive cylinders, and for other purposes, is provided with an auxiliary valve f which opens before the valve a and admits steam beneath a piston d rigidly attached to the valve a. Normally, the space c below the piston d is in communication with the outlet i, but when the valve f is opened, a valve h rigidly attached to the stem g of the valve f is lifted to a seat k and closes the outlet m of the chamber c. The seat k consists of a movable ring which normally rests upon projections m formed on the valve casing. When the main valve a opens, the seat k is lifted with the valves h, f so that the chamber c remains closed during the time that the valve a is being opened. During the reverse movement, the valve h opens as soon as the seat k reaches the projections n, and the balancing pressure in the chamber c is thus relieved.
