Abstract
2056. Renold, C. G., and Renold, Ltd., H. Jan. 27. Variable - speed and reversing gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles, of the type in which a direct drive is obtainable through a clutch, and other speeds through chain - wheels, chains, and a countershaft, is provided with means whereby the chainwheels, chains, and countershaft run only when the direct drive is not in use. The countershaft d, Fig. 1, which is parallel to alined driving and driven shafts b, c, carries fixed wheels g, q, s connected by chains to wheels e, p, r, respectively, loose on the shafts b, c. For the direct drive, a clutch member n on the end of the shaft b is engaged by a member m slidably secured to the shaft c. The wheels e, p, rare then loose, so that none of the chain gearing is actuated. Two reduced speeds and reversed driving are obtained through the countershaft by driving it from the wheel e. The wheel e is for this purpose connected to the shaft b by a slidable spring-actuated clutch f, except when the direct drive is in action, the clutch m being connected to the clutch f through a sleeve h with a collar k. For the low speeds, the wheels p, r are alternatively clutched to the shaft c. Chains of the inverted-tooth type are preferably employed. Reversed driving is obtained by a toothed gear t slidable on the shaft c into mesh with a gear u fast on the shaft d. In a modified arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the wheel e is supported on the shaft c along with the others. There is a sliding connexion 5, 9 between the shaft b and the clutch member f, which may be engaged alternatively with clutch teeth 7 on the shaft c or clutch teeth 3 on the wheel e.
