Abstract

4168. Freer, P. M. Feb. 18. Vibrationdampers. - Relates to shockabsorbing devices of the friction type, specially y applicable to the springs of automobiles or like vehicles, but not restricted thereto, and consists of two opposed series of intermeshing wedges or blocks, the bases of one set abutting against a wall and those of the other set against a cam-surface having equallydisposed crests and valleys, so that, as the cam rotates, relative movement takes place between the separate wedges of the two series. A further feature of the invention comprises the connexions between the device and the springs or other bodies to which the device is attached. In the form illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, a flanged casing 1 connected to an arm 13 is closed by a stamped metal cap 3 on an arm 5. Two sets of wedges 6, 7 are enclosed within the casing, the set 6 bearing against the wall 2 of the casing 1, and the set 7 against a cam 8 which rotates with the arm 13. The arm 13 is attached to one body, for example the top of an elliptic spring, and the arm 5 to the other movable body, for example the lower member of the spring. In operation, any relative motion of the two parts of the spring causes a rotation of the cam 8 relatively to the casing 1, and consequent relative motion of the series of wedges 6 relatively to the series of wedges 7. The casing 1 is filled with oil, and the wedges may be grooved to facilitate the admission of oil between the wedges. Springs 22, Fig. 3, may be arranged to act upon the wedges 7. One of the arms 5, 13 may be dispensed with by fastening the corresponding part of the casing directly to the body to which the device is applied. The arms are connected to the two parts to be controlled by means of bolts 23, Fig. 2, having spherical heads 24 engaging a two-part socket 25 provided with an oil recess 26, a soft felt or similar washer 29, and a spring 30 and bolt 31 to close together the two parts of the socket to compensate for wear. In modified constructions, the casing and arm 5, Fig. 11, comprise duplicate parts 33, the casing being lined with a steel band 43 forming a bearing- surface for the wedges 6. The wedges 7 bear upon a two-part cam 8 having an hexagonal bore to fit upon hexagonal bosses on the arms 13. The inward radial movement of the wedges 7 is retarded by spring fingers 49 extending from a spring plate 48 and engaging inclined portions on the wedges. The spring fingers may be replaced by flat springs in recesses on the edge of the cam, or a floating spring- restrained cam-plate may be placed between the two parts of the cam 8, Fig. 11, the valleys and crests of this plate not coinciding completely with those of the cam 8.
