19,800. Lake, W. E., [Head, F. S., and Goodall, J. N.]. Aug. 24. Butt joints; couplings with union nuts; overlap joints with circum ferential packing. - The coupling comprises two fittings 5, 6, each having a collar furnished with a flat end meeting surface. The collars are tapered at 10 and 13. to form a conical surface. An internally-threaded nut 9 embraces the collars and, when it is screwed up, forces a packing 18 on to the cone surfaces. The packing may be of metal, leather, rubber, &c. The flare on the inside of the collars facilitates the introduction of fish wires when the couplings are used on electric conduits.
