18,586. Nerom, H. van. Sept. 4. Locks, key; latches.-The latch spindle can be disconnected from the outside knob, and in the case of a night-latch from the key. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the spindle 6 is secured to the inside handle 7 and carries the follower 4. The outside handle 16 has a spindle 15 with pins 14 which normally engage grooves 13 in the follower 4, so that the latch can be operated by turning either handle. The outside handle is disconnected by pulling out the inside handle and holding it out against the action of the spring 12 by means of a catch 10. This same movement of the inside handle brings a projection 18 on the follower behind or into a slot 25 in a lever 19, by means of which the auxiliary bolt 21 is operated by a key, and locks this bolt in either the shot or withdrawn position. In the case of the night latch shown in Fig. 7, the latch follower is recessed to receive the key from the outside and has a notch 32, Fig. 8, for the key-bit, by means of which the key operates the latch. The key pin 33 is mounted on a disk 30 carried by a rod passing through the spindle 6 of the inside handle. By pulling the handle outwards, the follower 5 is brought flush with the disk 30, and the key remains inoperative. The side plates 34 of the latch are secured in place by rivets 35 passing through the door.
