Abstract

16,963. Frank, A., and Caro, N. Aug. 12. Nitrogen is prepared pure by passing combustion gases over a material having both an oxidizing and reducing action, such as a mixture of a metallic oxide and the corresponding free metal, which is oxidizable by oxygen and of which the oxide is reduced by carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The flow is regulated so as to convert completely the carbon and oxygen present into carbon dioxide, the mixture of metal and its oxide being maintained. The carbon dioxide is then absorbed from the mixture of that gas and nitrogen obtained. The combustion gas preferably used is producergas burned with a secondary supply of air. The combustion gas is passed directly, or after cooling and scrubbing, through a retort containing copper and copper oxide &c. If traces of oxygen appear in the final product, the secondary air supply is throttled for a time ; the reverse is done if too much carbon monoxide or hydrocarbon passes into the retort. The carbon dioxide originally present may be absorbed before treatment in the retort.
