Abstract

15.203. Kirke, P. St. G. July 17. Gas and explosive-vapour engines.-To equalize the pressure during the working stroke of an internal - combustion engine, a yielding piston or plunger, one face of which may be acted upon by an air cushion while the other is acted on by a more or less complete vacuum, is provided in the cylinder end. Ignition may be effected by the heat of compression or by other means. The plunger f, Fig. 1, which slides in the extension e, is attached to a piston g the upper side of which is open to the atmosphere through a non-return valve i<1>, while on the bottom side a vacuum is maintained, preferably, by the ejector action of the exhaust acting through the passage k. The top side of the piston g, the motion of which may be limited by a rod s, may communicate through a by-pass (not shown) with one or more chambers p so as to increase the pressure in the cylinder i ; or compressed air may be supplied through the inlet valve i<1>. To facilitate the complete expulsion of the products of combustion the plunger descends, after each explosion, to the position shown in dotted lines.
