Abstract

14,689. Heidtkamp, P. July 12, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act 1907]. Casting.-In the process of casting metal blocks under pressure to render them dense and to avoid the formation of cavities during solidification, pressure is applied on all sides of a mould formed in three or more mutually adjustable parts, and the cross-section of the mould is thereby reduced as the metal cools. The pressure may be applied by a number of plungers, but, in the example shown, the adjustable sides a, b, c, d of a rectangular mould, Figs. 1 and 3, are wedge-shaped and are pressed inwards by forcing them into an external mould h made in one piece. The parts a, b, c, d are held together by weak pins e, which are sheared during pressing, and a space k is left between each part and the external mould. The mould a, b, c, d, which rests on a die f, is filled outside the press, and brought into position by a trolly g. A piston then raises the die f, until the part h bears against the frame r, when further motion of the piston presses the mould a, b, c, d into the part h, thereby forcing each part inwards and reducing the cross-seption of the mould. At the same time, a die q and piston p exert a vertical pressure on the metal. The pressure on the pistons l, p is increased as the block cools. Moulds are also shown for a triangular and an hexagonal ingot, and for compressing two or four rectangular ingots simultaneously.
