Nailing.-Relates t o machines for driving Cutlan bills or loose nails of like e rectangular cross-section which require to be driven into the work with the longer dimension of their heads lying crosswise to its margin. The nails are fed down a raceway F with the longer dimension of their heads in the direction of travel, and in order that they may be turned into alinement with the path of a separator G, and into correct relation to the edge of the work, the raceway F is turned sideways at its delivery end F<1>. The curve is also arranged for the purpose of producing a gap between the nails for the entry of the separator as shown in Fig. 3 and so that the nails shall be continuously in engagement with the sides of the raceway to ensure precision of feed. The nails are fed singly by the separator G, which moves in a path tangential to the curve of the raceway, into an oblong recess D<7> in a nail-transferrer D mounted to slide in a bearing D<2> bolted to the machine frame. The nail-transferrer is operated in opposition to a spring E by the engagement of a tappet-roll J<1> on the awl bar with a projection H<3> on a lever H pivoted to the machine-head at H<1>. A projection H<2> on the lever H operates through means D<6> on the nail-transferrer which are adjustable to ensure alinement between the raceway end F<1> and the recess D<7> when the nail-transferrer is in its retracted position. The spring E, in conjunction with lock-nuts D<5> which co-operate with the bearing D<2>, forces the nail in the recess D<7> into alinement with the driver C when the lever H is freed. The recess D<7> conforms to the shape of the nail, and the side nearest the driver is constituted by a spring flap D<8>, which grips the nail while it is being transferred to the driving position but yields to allow the lever H to retract the transferrer while the driver is down.
