Abstract

3231. Hagen, R. April 15, 1905, [date appliedjor under Patents Act, 1901]. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Relates to change-speed driving-gear for motor-vehicles, of the type in which two conical pulleys are used connected by an endless band which passes either between or round the pulleys, and consists in means for obtaining a direct drive at high speed, and in means for reversing. Fig. 1 shows the fore part of a vehicle fitted with the driving-gear. The motor a drives the shaft b, on which is mounted a conical drum c. Parallel to this shaft, another shaft g is mounted on radially-sliding bearings, and has keyed to it an oppositely-placed conical pulley e. When the shaft is moved inwards by the pedal f, motion is transmitted by an endless belt d, pressed tightly between the cones, and movable longitudinally by any suitable means. The shaft g drives the longitudinal Cardan shaft o by means of the friction wheels h, i, separated by another endless band k, and at the highest speed the clutch l may be put into gear so that the drive is direct. To reverse, the belt d is moved to the cylindrical part of the pulley e, and an auxiliary friction roller (not shown) is brought into engagement with the two cylindrical parts of the pulleys. Instead of the belts d, k passing between the pulleys c, e, they may pass around them, in which case, the drive is obtained by increasing the distance between the parallel shafts. If desired, the motor may be mounted so that its shaft is in line with the shaft g, and is connected by toothed gearing with the driving-cone c, a direct drive being obtained at high speed by clutching the shaft g to the motor shaft. In a modification, shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the cone e is displaced longitudinally along its shaft to obtain the pressure on the belt, and the two shafts are connected by toothed gearing or by wedge and groove gearing. A direct drive at high speed is obtained by sliding the clutch member k to the left. A reverse drive is obtained by means of a belt passing under the pulleys l, k, and over the tensioning-pulleys s, t. When the latter are swung upwards by the lever v, the belt is tightened and the shaft o driven in the direction opposite to that of the motor shaft. In the case of heavy motor vehicles, two driven cones e and two belts d may be used in order to increase the friction surface.
