Abstract

8124. Soc. Franþaise de Constructions MÚcaniques Anciens Etablissements Cail. Aug. 14, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Gas and like engines, exhaust valve and valve gear for, and starting. Fig. 1 shows a compressionreducing device to facilitate starting as applied to the valve described in Specification No. 16,133, A.D. 1903. It is also applicable to all motors in which the exhaust valve is operated by an eccentric, and to two-stroke as well as four-stroke motors. The eccentric e controls the exhaust valve a by the rod d and levers e, b. The valve a is open during a period of time corresponding to the angle A, the a n g l e B corresponding to the compression stroke. The compression-reducing device comprises a roller h carried by a link j jointed to the extension of the lever b and controlled by a lever k. The arm n of the lever c has a projection o which gears with the roller h. To reduce the compression, the lever k is brought into the position shown. While the eccentric describes the angle B or a fraction of it, the projection o comes in contact with the roller h and raises the valve. By placing the lever k in position k', the roller h is thrown out of gear. The lever k may be controlled by hand or by a governor.
