Abstract

5978. Martin, S. F. March 30. Walking toys.-Relates to mechanical walking figures. A spring barrel a actuates through gearing g, g<1> a driving-axle h carrying cranks m which engage the upper ends of levers n turning on the cross-bar o<1> and slotted to allow vertical movement. The cross-bar o<1> carries rods o terminating at their lower ends in feet, through which the levers n pass. The driving-mechanism is controlled by an escapement l, and alternately raises each side of the figure and causes it to move forward by a series of circular movements. In a modification, the lower ends of the levers n are connected to whee's mounted eccentrically on the feet, or these wheels may be driven through connecting-rods, bands, or bevel gearing. Similar arrangements may be applied to figures representing quadrupeds, and the head &c. may also be made to move.
