Regulating.-The 'back pressure in the exhaust pipe of a two-stroke engine is varied for regulating the output by introducing a stream of scavenging-air into the exhaust pipe in a direction opposing the flow of the exhaust gases. Air entering by a pipe e into a chamber d is directed backwards along the exhaust pipe b, c, and is regulated by a hand or governor controlled throttle f. A baffle i may be fitted so as to form an annular passage h for the gases. The chamber d may be fitted at the outlet side of an exhaustsilencer, so that the air is directed into the silencer.
