Abstract
197,120. McGrew, J. A., and Loree, J. F. March 9, 1922. Operating toothed wheels.-In combination of motors with driving-gear for transmitting their drive, shown applied to a booster for attachment to locomotives, railway coaches &c., in which steam or compressed air cylinders drive the axles through disengageable toothed gearing, the steam, air, &c. moves a valve 24, blocking the pipe 20 leading to the cylinders, against the action of a spring 25 to move a gear-wheel 13 carried on a frame 14 pivoted on the shaft 10 into mesh with a wheel 12 on the driven axle 6. The wheel 13 gears constantly with a wheel 11 on the shaft 12 driven by cranks and connecting-rods from the cylinders. The gear teeth are thus thrown into mesh to transmit the drive immediately the motor has started, so avoiding shock. Grooves 22 with flared ends are provided in the valve socket at each side of the valve. Specifications 177,134, 194,928, and 198,455, [Class 79 (v), Motor vehicles, Steering &c.], are referred to.
