Abstract

9051. Saillant, B. H. April 29. Drawings to Specification. Retting.-The dry or green stalks of China grass are treated for half-an-hour in a digester, at a pressure of three atmospheres and a temperature of 130‹ C. in a bath containing 1 part of sodium carbonate of 90‹ to 92‹ BÚ., 1 part of caustic soda of 70‹ to 72‹ BÚ., and 1 part of sodium bisulphite of 30‹ BÚ. for every 100 parts of water ; and afterwards for a quarter of an hour in a bath containing 1 part per hundred of sodium bisulphite at 80‹ or 90‹ C. in an open vessel. The stalks are then broken, scutched, &c. The strips are then ungummed by the following process:- (1) Macerating for 5 hours in a cold bath containing 8 parts of sulphuric acid of 53‹ BÚ., and 2 parts of hydrochloric acid of 22‹ BÚ. for every 1000 parts of water ; (2) treating for 2 hours at a pressure of 4 atmospheres and temperature of 144‹ C. in a bath which has been already once employed and contains 12 parts of caustic soda of 70‹ to 72‹ BÚ., 12 parts of carbonate of soda of 90‹ to 92‹ BÚ., and 6 parts of bisulphite of soda of 38‹ BÚ. for every 1000 parts of water; (3) macerating for 5 hours in the first bath, cold ; (4) treating for 3 hours in a digester with some fresh second bath ; (5) macerating them for the third time cold in the first bath for 5 hours ; (6) treating for 12 hours at 70‹ C. in a bath containing 3 parts of Marseilles soap and one of '' turning oil for every 1000 parts of water. The strips are finally dried in a centrifugal machine. Some of the operations may be carried out by means of regenerated liquor obtained from previous operations. The Specification also describes apparatus consisting of a pair of tanks or vessels, which may be hermetically closed, and heated by steam coils, and are connected by pipes and stop cocks in such a manner that the liquor which has been used in one tank may be passed to the other, mixed or strengthened with new liquor, and used again for operating on fresh material.
