The drum 4, surrounded by coarse and fine sieves 5, 6, which are provided with plates 7 for the return of insufficientlyreduced material, is placed above a trough in which water is caused to circulate. Nozzles 11 are also arranged to spray water upon the outer sieve. Water is fed into the trough by a pipe 10 ; it escapes, carrying with it the lighter particles of ores &c., over the gate 12, which is adjusted so as to maintain the water at about the level of the inner sieve. The heavy particles of the material escape into a trough 14 by a pipe 13, which may be made telescopic to permit of the regulation of the fineness of the delivered material.
