Abstract

19,464. Tuttle, H., and Tuttle, S. Sept. 13. Linkwork; mounting and securing wheels &c. on shafts.-Relates to driving-mechanism for bicycles &c. The hub of the driving- wheel, Fig. 2, is provided with crank arms e', which are connected to crank arms d' by means of pins D. The pins D are adapted to receive ball bearings for the ends of the forked connecting-rods F, G. A wheel is mounted upon a sleeve 6, Fig. 5, which is screwed upon the divided crank axle b. This wheel is made up of two triangular plates C, C', the angular ends of which are placed at an angle of about 30‹ to each other, and are connected by means of three T-headed arms the ends of which, together with the angular ends of the plates C, C<2>, form supports for the bearing-pins of the rollers r. The whole wheel is bolted together and to a collar on the sleeve 6. Specification No. 21,350, A.D. 1897, describes a driving-mechanism with two separate wheels. The sleeve 6 has upon each of its ends a ring 7, which forms with a cone 8, screwed into the bracket 9, a ball race for the bearing. The brackets 9 are split and bolted so as to clamp the cones 8. The forked frame members A, A', A<3> are connected to the brackets. To each bracket 9 a rectangular frame 10, Fig. 10, is attached. The frames 10 are connected by bolts passing through sleeves 14 upon which links 15 are pivoted. These links have pivoted jaws f each provided with a slot f for the engagement of the rollers r. Each branch of the forked connecting-rods F, G, which branches are braced together by a link F<2>, has a large eye within which is located ball bearings. The inner cone of the ball bearing is secured to an arm f<3> which is integral with the jaw f<2>. The outer periphery of each jaw is in the form of a segment of a circle, around which it rocks upon horizontal guide-plates 16. The gearing is enclosed in a casing 3, which has holes for the passage of the forked rods F, G, which holes may be closed by flexible diaphragms. In a modification, the frames 10 are bent inwardly and secured by bolts screwed into sleeves provided with ball ways for the bearings of the jaws. The rear ends of each forked connecting-rod F, G are separately pivoted upon the crank-pin D.
