Abstract

17,962. Thompson, W. P., [Rogers, J. R.]. Aug. 20. Linotype machines.-The invention relates to machines for use with matrices having two or more formative characters, either of which may be used, as described in Specifications No. 5971, A.D. 1891, and No. 18,886, A.D. 1895. It is described as applied to the Mergenthaler machine (Specification No. 14,582, A.D. 1890), a portion of which is shown in front elevation in Fig. 1. The assembling-elevator I is provided with a longitudinal rib, and a corresponding stop i<11>, Fig. 11, is provided to stop the matrices so that their lower ears pass above this rib when they are pushed into the elevator I by the star-wheel h<2>. When the stop i<11> is withdrawn the matrices are pushed into the elevator I with their lower ears below the rib, and with their upper or ordinary characters in casting position. A line of matrices is shown having some parts raised and the others in the lower position. The stop i<11> is moved by a hand-lever i<12>. The supporting-rib in the elevator I is mounted to slide in and out so that it may be withdrawn when the matrices are all to be used in their lower or normal position. The line, after being raised, is transferred to the second elevator N, by which it is carried down to the mould wheel O and then raised to the level of the lifter bar T, by which it is lifted to the distributing-mechanism. The elevator N is provided with a rib n<10>, Fig. 16, for supporting the raised matrices. This rib is movable by levers n<11> so that it may be withdrawn, after the casting operation, to permit of the matrices being all pushed down to the same level before they are pushed on to the lifter bar T. The movement of the levers n<11> to withdraw the rib n<10> may be effected by projections on the framing engaging the upper ends of the levers as the elevator N reaches its highest position. The mould is provided with two grooves o<11>, o<12> for the ears of the matrices, and these are preferably formed by a separate plate o'‹ attached to the mould.
