Abstract

17,890. Wardall, J. Aug. 19. Circular knitting-machines for producing tubular or covered cords, such as blind cords, picture cords, upholstery cords, stay or boot laces, tapes, &c. are made so as to be capable of being driven at a very high speed. The fixed needle cylinder a, cylindrical below and tapered above, has tricks a' in which work jacks b<1>, having bits b<2> to engage the rotatable cam c and having the needles fixed to them on their inner edges. The needle cylinder may be conical, as in Fig. 9, or stepped. The higher the speed at which the cylinder is to be driven, the greater must be the diameter of the cam and the gentler the slope of the grooves. The needle cylinder is adjustable by the stem a<5> and set-screw, to regulate the length of loop. The cam cylinder is in two halves connected by columns c<2>; it carries one thread-carrier d<4> to each rise of the cam and a table f on which are suitable adjustable tension devices, spindles for cops, or bearings for spools; cops can thus be used without rewinding. The cam cylinder is retained in a groove in the needle cylinder bed by washers and screws c<6>, and is driven by bevel-wheels c<4>, c<5> from the main shaft. The core, when one is used, passes down through the hole a<3>, and together with the work is drawn off by a pair of grooved rollers e driven through a worm-wheel e<2> and worm e<1> from the main shaft. The speed can be regulated by changing the wheel e', and the wheels e are pressed together by an adjustable spring e<4> acting on the fork e<3>. The needle cylinder may be rotated, and the cam ring fixed ; in this case, if a core is being covered, the core must be carried on a spool on a frame rotated by spur gearing at the same speed as the needle cylinder, to prevent twist in the core.
