Abstract

17,549. Cross, [or Millar], M. N., [Executrix of Millar, A.]. Aug. 15. Moulding fabrics.-Fabrics are produced by causing threads formed from plastic or liquid material to be in contact and adhere to one another at short distances. Such fabrics may be made of considerable thickness, for lining quilts or other articles. The plastic threads may otherwise be applied to light open-woven fabrics, of cotton or other material. A machine for making such fabrics is shown. An endless band A of oilcloth or waxed cloth is carried by two rollers and driven continuously by gearing and a pulley shaft. The plastic material is discharged from one or more nozzles F<2> on a receptacle F by air pressure. The nozzle and receptacle are reciprocated across the belt by linkage to a cam G, rotated by the pulley shaft, so that the material is delivered as thread in a zig-zag line on the band A, and the threads cross one another as the band continues to travel. The material may pass under a pressing-roller, or air may be blown upon it, to press the threads together ; the air may be charged with vapour or spray, to cement the threads. The receptacle may be revolved about a vertical axis, to form overlapping circles on the band, or its motion and that of the band may be otherwise modified. The nozzles or the band only may move. Several receptacles, which may contain differently-coloured materials, may deliver on one band, to form several narrow strips of fabric, or one variegated piece. The receptacle may be heated, if necessary, by a water janket and gas burner, or otherwise The materials used may be gutta-percha, india-rubber, nitrocellulose, gelatine, albumen, silk, or other substances, with solvents to render them liquid or plastic, hydrochloric acid being mentioned as a solvent for silk. The fabric may be subsequently vulcanized or rendered less combustible, or made insoluble by treatment with formaldehyde vapour.
