Abstract

17,415. Graham, J. C. Aug. 12. Chlorine.-In the preparation electrolytically of sodium amalgam, which may be afterwards employed by known methods either to obtain caustic soda or metallic sodium, the electrolyte, consisting of brine rendered conductive by the addition of sodium sulphate or other salt, is rapidly circulated, as described in Specification No. 8410, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Electrolysis &c.], entering at G and passing along the shallow trough between the carbon anode C, forming the roof of the cell, and the moving mercury cathode flowing along the slightly-inclined metallic bed D in the opposite direction. The spent electrolyte and the chlorine pass away together through the outlet J. The chlorine is collected, and the brine is re-saturated and returned to the inlet G. Mercury is charged into the cell through the tube E, and the amalgam flows away at F. Several such troughs may be arranged above one another or side by side, so that the electrolyte may pass through several in succession.
