Abstract
3409. Cartwright, G. A. Feb. 9. Knitting stockings and socks. After knitting a stocking A with seamless heel and toe in the ordinary manner, the loops of the leg at the point B<1> are run on half the needles of a circular machine, which is reciprocated to form the heel B, C, C<2>, foot D, and toe E, E<1>. The side edges B<3>, E<2>are now linked to the stocking A, thus forming a double heel, foot, and toe, one thickness of which can be cut away when worn. Extra heels, feet and toes can be knitted in lengths, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, divided along lines E<2>, B<1>; all the edges are now seamed to a stocking to form double heels, feet, and toes.
