Abstract

187,956. Treitel, H., and Kammerziegelges. Oct. 26, 1921, [Convention date]. Moulds; pressing plungers and dies; extrusion machines; processes. - Hollow bricks closed on all sides are obtained by first moulding the brick with one end open and with burrs on the walls at the open end, and then pressing together the burrs until they meet. The mould 2 is partially filled with material m and covered with a plate 3 so that lateral spaces ware formed. A plunger 4 is then forced into the mould until the spaces w are filled as shown in Fig. 2. The brick is then closed by side plungers 5, Fig. 3. Additional pressure may be obtained by using a plunger 8 with a ridge as in Fig. 6 and by making the plungers 5 smaller than the spaces w, the top of the brick being subsequently cut off level and the burrs v stripped off during ejection. Fig. 7 shows apparatus adapted to form bricks from clay extruded from a press 9 over a mandrel 10, burrs 11 being formed by notched rollers 12 and pressed together by rollers 13 or stamps. A further modification is shown in Fig. 8 in which press members 16 which may move with the clay are reciprocated so as to first allow thickened wall portions to be extruded and subsequently to press said portions together. Alteration in the speed of the extruded strip is allowed for by corresponding alteration in the speed of reciprocation of the members 16 or by regulating the pressure inside the press by means of a conduit 18.
