Abstract
187,205. Schmidt, W. Oct. 11, 1921, [Convention date]. Exhaust gases, discharging.-A valve for discharging combustion products from submarines is cooled by a current of cold air or gas in contact with the seating surfaces. The valve casing B is attached to the hull A and the valve C is carried by a guided spindle E. A sleeve G is slightly spaced from the casing B, and sleeves K, N are slightly spaced from the spindle, so that cold compressed air from the stokehold passes through the annular spaces thus formed to cool the valve and seating surfaces. The sleeves G. K, N may be covered with insulating material, and an expansion joint H may be provided. The valve is operated by a hand-wheel a and a handle h may be attached to the central stem, by which the valve may be rotated on its seating. An annular nozzle P may be provided to which air is admitted' through the openings Q, so that an induced draught is created through the valve. The valve head may have a porcelain cover O. The boiler S has an uptake F at each end, each uptake being connected to three discharge valves R. Specification 9667/15, [Class 135, Valves &c.], is referred to.
