Abstract

186,951. Kershaw, G. April 16, 1921. Winding - machines; building - motions.-Relates to mechanism for operating the guides in a winding or like machine. Weights s, Figs. 1 and 2, for lifting the copping-rail a are supported on chains t, which work on barrels u, fixed on shafts f carrying pinions e in engagement with racks d on the poker bars c. A cam y, Fig. 3, working on a bowl z, controls the movements of a copping-lever h, and by means of this lever moves the copping-rail a down and controls its return under the action of the weights s and the tension of the thread &c. A chain v, and a chain-rod-chain combination, w, w<1>, w, Figs. 1 and 2, couple respectively the barrels u, u and x, g and are arranged so that when the chain w connected to the barrel g is pulled by means of the copping- lever h, all the shafts f will rotate to raise the weights s and lower the copping rail a. A shaft 2 on the lever h, Figs. 2 and 3, carries a ratchet-wheel 1 and a worm 3 engaging with a worm-wheel 4 fast with the barrel g, these devices operating on the movement of the copping-lever h and turning the barrel g, thus allowing the chain w to be unwound, and the weights s gradually to raise the copping-rail a. A handle can be fitted on a square 5 on the shaft 2 to return the barrel g to its initial position, and a stop 4a on the wormwheel 4 is provided to ensure a return to the exact initial position. To lower the copoing-rail, a pedal 6 pivoted on a stud 7, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided and is connected by a chain 8 to a barrel 11 bearing a chain 12 connected to a rod 13 which carries a tappet 14 arranged to act on another tappet 15 on the rod' w<1> when the pedal is depressed and to pull down the rail a. The tappets 14, 15 may embrace both rods 13, w<1> so that the rod w' carries the rod 13. The rod 13 is connected to one end of a spring 16, supported at its other end by a rod 17, secured to the rod w<1> by a tappet 18, while a guide-roller 19 for the chain w connected to the barrel g is mounted on a shaft in a block 20, and a guide pulley 21 is carried by a bracket 22. The disposition of the teppets 14, 15 and the strength of the spring 16 are such that successive upward and downward movements of the rail a do not effect the pedal 6: but each progressive upward movement of the rail c results in a corresponding raising of the pedal. A detent 23 engaging in a hole 24 in the block 9 is provided to hold the machine while yarn is being wound below the bottoms of the bobbins. A modification of the pedal 6 is described in which a hand wheel is arranged to control the motion of the copping-rail a. Specification 142,298 is referred to.
