Abstract

186,929. Hesselman, K. J. E. Oct. 8, 1921, [Convention date]. Regulating delivery by by-passes ; regulating delivery by opening suction valves. - In a fuel pump for internal-combustion engines in which the suction valve or a by-pass valve is kept open during the first and last portions of the delivery stroke, the valve is controlled by rectilinearly moving cams and means co-operating therewith, these cams and co-operating means having a relative movement at a rate proportional to the movement of the pump plunger, and either the cams or the co-operation means being adjustable while in operation to vary the movement and the period of injection. In one form, the suction valve 2 is kept open by a rod 3 operated by a lever 7 oscillated about a pivot 6 by rollers 8 on arms 10 which are reciprocated at a rate proportional to the movement of the pump plunger. On the spindle 9 of the rollers 8 are mounted two smaller rollers running on two stationary members 13, 14 provided with inclined surfaces 19, 22. When one of the small rollers is moving on the raised surface 17, the valve 2 is held open during the first portion of the delivery stroke, and when the other small roller is moving on the surface 20 during the return movement of the arms 10, the valve is opened during the last portion of the plunger stroke. By adjusting the member 13 by means of a screw 23, the movement at which injection begins is varied, and by adjusting the member 14 by hand or governor, the moment at which the injection ends and, therefore, the quantity of fuel injected, are varied. In another form, the cams are carried by the reciprocating member and the rollers are stationary, the reciprocating member and one of the roller-carrying members being adjustable. In another form, the cams are carried by the reciprocating members and the stationary rollers adjustable. In another form, the cam-surface 22 is on the lever 7, which is adjustable, and the other is on the member 13 on a lower level, while the rollers reciprocate between them.
