185,135. Reid, J. H. Feb. 22, 1921. Electrode furnaces.-An electric furnace 24 for use in the production of gas and calcium carbide comprises a charging stack 25 with sliding gates 26 and 27, and a furnace chamber 28 formed within a firebrick casing 29 having a thick base 30 with a carbide pit 31. The cast iron bottom 34 of the furnace chamber is made flat with inclined sides 35 and has a carbon lining 36 37 of the same shape. Discharge outlets 38 are provided in the inclined sides of the furnace bottom. Carbon electrodes 39, to which copper rings 42 with sockets 43 carrying the electric cables are attached, pass through stuff. ing boxes 40 and have vertical faces 41 providing a vertical passageway to the bottom of the bearth. Gaseous products are withdrawn through a conduit 47, a hydraulic main 47<a>, and a fan 47<c> to the gas holder. If the molten car. bide in the hearth congeals, it is re-fused by means of a pair of electrodes 57 passing through the discharge outlets 38.
