Abstract
184,094. Sahlin, A. Oct. 8, 1921. Charging.-In blast-furnace charging-apparatus of the kind described in Specification 5465/05, the discharge opening of the receiving-hopper k is closed by a vertically-moving segmental spherical bell l, supported on the upturned end of a bent lever 1, which, as described in Specification 115,405, carries a counterweight 10 and is supported from a fulcrum 3 by links 4, 7, and pins 5, 6, 8, 9. To prevent the bell l from tilting in a plane at right-angles to that of the lever 1, the concave side is provided with two parallel ribs 11 having curved grooves 12 ending in a bored hole 13 closed by plugs 14, the upper surface of the hole 13 resting on the circular T-headed cross-piece 2 forming the end of the lever 1. Tilting in a plane parallel to that of the lever 1 is prevented in one direction by a wall 15 connecting the ribs 11, and in the other direction by the shape of the lever 1, which, on slight tilting of the bell, contacts with the rim thereof. In operation, a charging-tub m, m<1>, closed by a conical bell o, is brought over the hopper k and forrms a substantially gas-tight seal therewith by means of the flange m<2>. To deliver the charge to the rotary hopper a, the rod n is operated to lower the bell o which carries with it the bell l, the latter, on completion of the charging operation, rising, under the influence of the counterweight 10, to make a tight joint with the seating-ring k<1>.
