Abstract
171,157. Smith, F. S. Aug. 6, 1920. Electric killing-appliances. -In apparatus for destroying fungi, bacteria, insects, &c., in food and other products by passing them through a gap across which an electric spark discharge is taking place, the potential drop across the gap is reduced by placing a condenser in series with it to such an extent that the goods treated and the cartons or other containers in which they are enclosed, are not damaged. The process is stated to be applicable to grains, beans, milled cereals, dried fruits, furs, woollens, &c. The condenser is formed of hollow plates 6, 7 with rounded edges enclosed in insulating casings 10, 11 containing a. dielectric liquid such as transformer oil, paraffin oil &c. or a solid such as ceresin. The discharge takes place between knobs 20, arranged ,in rows on the containers 10, 11. The knobs are connected by shanks 18, Fig. 3, passing through the wall of the casings to plates 15, 16 within the casings. The plates 15 are provided with projections 17, which abut against the wall of the casing to reduce current leakage. The substances treated are carried across the spark gaps by a belt conveyer 25 preferably arranged at a small angle to the rows of knobs, so as to secure that as much of the substance as possible passes directly between two knobs. Current is supplied by a transformer 1 or the like.
