Cutting-edges, shaping and treating.-Knives and other cutlery are ground and sharpened by a grinding-wheel carried by a pivoted arm, which is caused to rise. and fall, during the passage of the knife to and fro beneath the grinding-wheel, by a templet having a profile corresponding to that required for the knife. The grinding-wheel 17 is journaled in a frame carried by arms 9, 9<a>, 11, 11<a>, which at one end are pivoted on a shaft 5 rotating in a bearing 4, and at the other end carry a bracket 12 forming a bearing for a nut 24<a>. The nut is operated, through worm gearing 24, 25, by a handle 27 and engages a screw 28, which carries at its lower end a ball 29; operation of the nut causes the grinding-wheel to fall, or to rise, to compensate for wear. The screw is positioned at its lower end by braces 31, 32 extending between a collar 33 and the shaft 5. The knife 47 is mounted and clamped on a support 45 carried by a compound slide 35, 39. The slide 39 is reciprocated, in a direction transversely of the knife by a connecting-rod 40 operated by a crank 41a which is driven, through gearing 41, 43, by the shaft 5. The connecting-rod is guided, against transverse movement, by a fixed guide 58 and is connected to the slide 39 through a rod 40<b> extending beneath the slide. The slide 35 carrying the slide 39 is movable lengthways of the knife by a screw operated by a hand-wheel 37, or automatically. The slide 39 carries a templet 46 having a profile corresponding to the shape of the knife-blade, and the ball 29 is held in contact with the templet by a spring 48. The blade is pressed down during grinding by a spring-pressed roller 50. Water is supplied by a pump driven from the shaft 5, a water receptacle 2 being provided. In operation, the knife and the templet are reciprocated beneath the grinding-wheel and the ball respectively and are traversed by operation of the hand-wheel 37; the grinding-wheel rises and falls, and thus produces a section on the blade which is a copy of the contour of the templet.
