Grates. - A furnace grate having tiltable grate-elements is supplied with steam, or a mixture of steam and air, through perforated tubes which serve as pivcts for the grateelements and extend across the full width of the grate. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, each of the grate-elements consists of supports 1 on which the grate-bars rest and end-plates 2 which serve as turning pivots, through which pass the perforated steam-pipes 5, the pipes 5 either remaining stationary when the grate-elements are agitated or rotating with them. In the case where the pipes 5 remain stationary, steam is supplied either from nozzles on the steam-supply pipes 12 delivering into choke-tubes on the ends of the pipes 5, thus supplying air in addition to steam, or through a stuffing-box 13 as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. Semicircular partitions 14, 15 on the delivery and pivot tubes respectively allow the stuffing-box 13 to function as a valve, little or no steam passing to the grate when the grate is stationary; but when it is desired to discharge ash from the grate by agitating the grate elements, steam is admitted in impulses by the simultaneous operation of the tilting-lever 8 and the valve in the stuffing-box 13. As shown in Fig. 1, a similar blast-arrangement is effected by opening the. steam-supply valve 7 by the tilting-lever 8 through a link 9, adjustment being provided as shown.
