Grates.-A gas-producer or carbonizer is provided with two truncated conical grates f, l, which are supported on fire-brick rings or sections, which form a lining inside the casing a of the producer, as shown. The grates f, l are formed as complete units and may be of refractory material formed in sections, which may be made integral with the refractory lining of the producer. An air-space f<1> surrounds the upper grate f, and an inspection door a<1> is provided. A similar air space with a door a<2> surrounds the lower grate l, in which is fitted a hemispherical clinker-cutter m with teeth m<2>, and operated by a handle m<1>. A fan inside the casing h delivers air through the pipe i to the air-space f<1> and steam from the coil k below the grate l may be mixed with the air. The delivery pipe i may extend downwardly to the grate l so that the passage of air through the producer may be reversed, valves being provided to cut off the supply of air from one or other of the grates. The produced gases are withdrawn from any suitable point in the casing, for example, at or near the spaces surrounding the upper or lower grates, while a chimney g fitted with a closure plate g' serves as an outlet when the producer is starting or is temporarily not in use. Two or more producers may be coupled together so that the surplus heat from one may be utilized for the purpose of carbonizing fuel in the others, thereby cooling and enriching the gas supply.
