Abstract
176,744. Milne, S. Nov. 26, 1920. Pulping-engines.-Relates to paper pulp refining-engines of the type described in Specification 21517/07, in which a revolving disc co-operates with two stationary side discs, the latter two discs being adjustable toward and from the revoluble disc. According to the present invention, the adjustment of the side discs is effected by screws h<2>, h<3>, &c., Fig. 1 (four for each disc), mounted in two pairs of lateral supporting-brackets i, and operable simultaneously by screw and worm gear l, m, o, r, &c. and chain gear p from the shaft s, which, when required to be used, can be connected up by fast-and-loose belt pulley gearing to the shaft d of the revoluble disc e, Fig. 4. To indicate the degree of adjustment, pointers on the discs co-operate with gauges on the casing. The shaft d is supported in three double-thrust pedestal bearings c, one on the driving-side not being shown, and is driven by the pulley g. To prevent leakage of pulp at the bearings, water under pressure may be supplied between the neck rings d<1> and packing-rings d<2>, Fig. 4. The stationary disc a<1>, a<2> and the inner surface of the casing a are faced with non-corrosive metal, as shown at f, Fig. 4. The pulp is delivered at the inlet x<3>, from the feed-pipe x<1>, and, after passing outwards radially between the discs a<2>, e, returns between the discs e, a' to the outlet x<4>, x<2> the cutter-bars e<1> of the discs being given a slight set from the radial to facilitate this movement. The cutter-bars e' are of rolled bronze, and are held in place by rectangular beech strips e<2> and brass wedges e<3> ; they are equally pitched, and the numbers on two co-acting faces are equal or approximately so. The bars near the inlet and outlet openings x<3>, x<4> are tapered, and the openings are formed by omitting certain of the bars. The arrangement of the openings may be varied.
