Vapours, utilizing for effecting further evaporation; rectifiers; water, distilling; hydrocarbons, distilling.-In evaporating or distilling liquids, the vapours generated in a still a, Fig. 2, are passed through a heat-exchanger f in which they generate vapours from an auxiliary liquid, and these vapours are utilized to effect further evaporation in the still a by being circulated through a compressor d and a coil e in the still. The vapours from the still a may be compressed before passage through the heat exchanger, when compression of the vapours in the auxiliary circuit may be dispensed with. The heat-exchanger may be arranged in the upper part of the still. The vapours from two or more stills may be utilized in separate heat-exchangers to generate auxiliary vapours which are compressed in the same compressor and utilized to heat all the stills. The compressor may be a multi-stage centrifugal compressor, the vapours being admitted at different stages according to their pressures. In evaporating water under reduced pressure, carbon bisulphide or sulphurous acid may be used as auxiliary liquids. The vapour of the auxiliary liquid may be injected into the liquid undergoing evaporation; for example, in distilling oils, the oil vapours may be used to generate steam which is compressed and injected into the oil. Vapours containing two or more constituents may be fractionally condensed by passage from a still a, Fig. 7, through two or more heat-exchangers f<1>, f<2> in succession, the auxiliary vapours from which are compressed in different stages of a compressor d, and utilized separately in heating-coils e<1>, e<2>.
