Abstract

161,969. Bretschneider, J. April 21, 1920, [Convention date]. Inhalers. - Apparatus for inhalation is so constructed as to deliver air which is under slight pressure and has passed either through a heated w a t e r receptacle or through a cooling device. In the form shown in Fig. I, air from a weighted bell 22 is delivered, together with atmospheric air induced by the injector 20, to a distributing pipe 11 whence it passes either downwards to a chamber 3 containing heated water or upwards to the space between an annular cooling chamber 5 and a ribbed inner cooler 6. A sieve 9 attached to the lower edge of a bell 8 secured to the inner cooler 6 serves to keep ice from rising when this is employed in the annular outer cooler. Air from the heater or cooler passes through nozzles 12 or 17 to saliva traps 15 to which breathing tubes A, B are connected by short lengths of rubber tube C. The tube not in use may be placed in a holder 19 so that the connection C is, kinked and the corresponding part of the apparatus shut off. An insulating partition 4 separates the heating chamber 3 from the cooler 5, 6. The air supply bell 22 is fitted with a non- return inlet valve 24 so that it may be filled merely by raising it in its outer vessel 21, and with a space 23, for water ballast to give the required pressure. In a modification, Fig. II, air under pressure is supplied by a water jet injector pump 26 mounted in the inner cooling chamber 6 and passes by a 'conduit 31 to an injector 20, as in the first modification, and thence, as indicated by the arrows, either to the space between the coolers 5, 6 or to the heater 3. A perforated plate 29 prevents escape of air through the ascending outflow pipe 30 from the inner vessel 6. The bell 8 carries a water chamber at the top to serve as ballast to keep the receptacle 6 at the lowest position shown in Fig. II.
